CLOUDSCAPE :: CONCEPT

The Diamond is the metaphor that we have used in la Fundacion Metropoli to describe the new scales of cities. Dots, lines and surfaces represent cities, axes of physical/digital connectivity, and the environmental systems. The city is understood as a complex system, a network of hubs, links and connections with the capacity to visualize the multiple layers that create itself. Cloudscape, a multimedia installation, takes into account the landscape as a living organism that breaths. It is fragile and transparent, connected within by lines of light that appear and disappear enhancing the dynamic character of the territory.

Cloudscape translates the city as a complex system, a network of hubs, links and connections with the capacity to visualize the multiple layers enclosing. We need to consider new methods of analysis, modeling and simulation to reflect the increasing complexity and interconnected nature of our times. A complex system is defined by a large number of interconnected elements that dynamically fluctuate in their areas of action. This radical change in our way of conceiving the world turns around the concept of network or network thinking. Networks are not only everpresent structures but also symbols of autonomy, flexibility, collaboration, diversity and multiplicity. We move and live in a network, the current city is a network system.

This multimedia and sound installation looks at the landscape as a living organism that breathes. It is fragile and transparent, connected within by lines of light that appear and disappear, enhancing the dynamic and intangible character of the territory.

CLOUDSCAPE :: INTERACTION

CLOUDSCAPE :: MATERIALS

The Cloudscape installation reacts and interacts with the viewer through light and sound. Four kinetic sensors, located on each side of the perimeter, evidence the human presence by sending a signal that activates an audio with a heartbeat sound. Each sensor can detect up to eight people, up to eight superimposed sound tracks (heartbeat), up to a total of thirty-two tracks of audio, which would cause a "white noise" in the sound layer. The same would happens with the light through the electroluminescent cable, the greater the human presence, the more acoustic and luminous activity, and therefore the more complexity within the installation reading. In this way, the public literally participates from the development of the work.

The urban cores are symbolically represented through nodes-networks made in borosilicate dipstick, a fragile and crystalline material that allows to make appear and disappear the city and that shows all its abstract character. The connections are represented by electrolumniscente cables, that connect all the crystalline nodes generating the links of this particular network. Finally, a sheet of water gives back the real cartography, a mirror where the dynamic relations of the installation reflect its extreme depth in an infinite window.
